About VIT University

VIT University, established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1996, was founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution called the Vellore Engineering College. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred “Deemed University” status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001. The University is headed by its founder and Chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan. In recognition of his services to India in offering world class education, he was conferred an honorary doctorate by the West Virginia University, USA. To accommodate the growing demand for quality education, VIT University has two campuses, the main campus at Vellore and another campus at Chennai. The objective of VIT is to create a dynamic environment that facilities interaction and dialogue. To augment learning resources and promote inter disciplinary research, VIT has consolidated various disciplines into eleven Schools of Excellence. There is, thus, synergy in the teaching learning process and members of the faculty are able to specialise in particular streams based on their interests. The VIT University’s main campus is located in the historic city of Vellore, a city that is almost mid way (about 3 hour drive) between Bangalore, considered the Silicon Valley of Asia and Chennai, known for its modern manufacturing prowess, providing an ideal environment for both study and interaction with industry. The campus is spread over an area of 360 acres. The University’s second campus is located in Chennai, formerly known as Madras. It is the capital of Tamil Nadu and is considered as the gateway to the southern part of India. Leading software companies have a big presence in the city. It is also known as the ‘Detroit of India’ as 60% of India’s auto exports originate from the city. The Chennai campus is spread over an area of 170 acres. The Institution offers 20 undergraduates, 29 postgraduates, 4 integrated and 4 Research Programmes. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (A statutory body of UGC, India) has reaccredited VIT University with an ‘A’ grade. Ten B.Tech programmes from Vellore campus and Four B.Tech Programmes from Chennai campus of VIT University have been accredited by ABET, http://www.abet.org. Current strength of students is around 30,000 in which, nearly one-third of them are women. Students from 60 countries as well as from every state in India are studying in VIT. VIT has been accredited by TCS, Wipro and Cognizant for academic collaboration and placements and has entered the Limca Book of Records for Campus Recruitment.
